About us

The Watson-Crick Centre for Molecular Medicine at the Islamic University of Science and Technology was established in 2020. The Centre is currently housed in a newly constructed Syed Mantaqi Memorial College of Nursing and Medical Technology building with a well-equipped Molecular Biology Research laboratory, Cell culture, and dark rooms. The Centre has started academic programs for the training of young clinical and non-clinical scientists who are keen to pursue careers in basic and medical research. The Centre is currently offering a Ph.D. program, and in the near future, it will offer an integrated M.Sc. - Ph.D. program in Molecular Medicine. One of the unique strengths of this Ph.D. program is its emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach whereby biomedical sciences, molecular and biochemical aspects of biology is addressed. The first batch of Ph.D. scholars was recruited in 2021. The Centre has been undertaking research projects of National and International importance in the thrust areas of Cell and Cancer biology, Biomarker, Drug discovery, Cancer Therapeutics, Gene regulation, and Genome instability. The Center has successfully attracted funds from various funding agencies such as the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Since its inception, the Centre has emphasized recruiting meritorious faculty in various specialized branches in Biotechnology. All the current Faculty members are awarded prestigious Ramalingaswami Re-entry or Ramanujan fellowships with an excellent track record of research in various areas of Biotechnology/ Cancer biology, and with exposure to high-class foreign laboratories. The Centre has published more than 10 research publications in SCI journals in 2021, with an average impact factor of 11.0. With continuous development and expansion of its scientific infrastructure and learned faculty, the Centre aims to become one of the shining beacons of the University and the nation in the near future.
