The B.Sc. program is our old 3-year program that prepared students for an actuarial career as well as postgraduate work in mathematics or applied mathematics. We have now replaced it with the new 4-year program that allows for a major in mathematics and minor in actuarial mathematics. It also gives various exit options including a 3-year B.Sc. program that will retain most of the strength of our old 3-year actuarial and financial math program. An actuary uses mathematical tools to do risk assessment mainly in the financial services sector including insurance companies, commercial banks, investment banks and retirement funds. Actuaries play a key role in designing insurance plans by determining the premium, monitoring the profitability of the company, and recommending corrective measures whenever necessary. To be successful, they need strong mathematical skills, business knowledge and a good understanding of human behavior. As such the curriculum for this course includes business and social science courses in addition to a broad spectrum of mathematics courses. This program will give our students the competitive edge in the financial industry that a traditional undergraduate program in mathematics would be unable to provide. |
