Welcome to the Department of Computer Science, one of the pioneering departments of Islamic University of Science & Technology (IUST) Kashmir. The department was established in the year 2006 with the objective of imparting quality education in the field of Computer Science. The department has a vibrant student body numbering around 150 and faculty numbering nearly 13. About 90% of students are postgraduates, mostly supported by government of India scholarships and rest 10% of students are Ph. D Scholars.

The Department initially started with AICTE approved postgraduate program of Master of Computer Applications (MCA) in the year 2006. This program is to inform, challenge, and train our diverse student body for a constantly changing world of technology. The primary objective of this program is also to enable our students to progress productively in software industry, academia, research, entrepreneurial pursuit, government, consulting firms & other information technology enabled services. The department also aims at making our students learn to achieve peer-recognition; as an individual or in a team; by adopting ethics & professionalism and communicate effectively to excel well in cross culture & inter-disciplinary teams.

In the year 2012, the department introduced M.Sc. Information Technology program with the aim to develop core competence in information technology and prepare the students to carry out development work, as well as take up challenges in research. The main objective of the M.Sc. Information Technology course is to provide the students a clear understanding of basic concepts and principles of Information Technology as a discipline and the rich & specialized skill set required to handle the computing systems in an applied branch of knowledge that represent a realistic world.

The vision of the Computer Science Department is Global Excellence and Local Relevance in Research, Teaching, and Technology Development in Computer Science. In pursuit of this vision, the department in the year 2019 started a Ph.D. Programme and engages itself immensely in research activities in various research areas. The Department’s research activities are funded by University and several Government organizations including the Department of Science & Technology (DST).

Several of our alumni hold important positions in the industry and academia worldwide. Students have been placed, both in India and abroad, in several leading national and international companies including Wipro, IBM, Oracle, and many more. Many others are serving as faculty members, both in India and abroad, in reputed educational institutions such as University of Kashmir, King Saud University, Department of Higher Education, Government of J&K etc.
