It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Averroes Centre for Philosophical Studies. The Centre
has been established to engage you in fundamental questions about reality, knowledge and value
besides helping you develop an interdisciplinary approach to learning. To accomplish this objective,
the Centre offers both open elective courses and research programme in Philosophy.
An open elective course in Philosophy helps instil general principles of theoretical thinking, create an
awareness with regard to answers to philosophical questions and develop skills like reading and
understanding complex materials--all of which are necessary to obtain knowledge of reality. This
branch of Philosophy known as ontology or the study of being is concerned with what actually exists
in the world about which we as humans can acquire knowledge. Students here at the Centre shall find
themselves raising questions in epistemology by inquiring about the scope and limits of human
knowledge. As such, opting for an open elective course in Philosophy shall help students grapple
intellectually with questions not only related to philosophy but other subjects also. Questions of value
remain invariably important for students and therefore courses in social and political philosophy shall
prepare you to be thoughtful and responsible citizens. An important function of Philosophy is to foster
deeper reflection on concepts, methods and issues that are fundamental within other disciplines. The
courses offered by the Centre, shall deepen your understanding of other disciplines be it Science,
Literature, Humanities and Art and thereby necessarily pave way for an interdisciplinary approach to
learning.
In recent years, attempts have been made to locate traditional Western canon in Philosophical Studies
within a plurality of intellectual tradition. The Centre with its focus on interdisciplinary research, aims
to examine the points of difference and intersection between philosophical perspectives and
approaches. A central component of this research is to challenge texts and their authors to discern
further clarifications/interpretation; to study and critically challenge the history of ideas that have
shaped basic ethical values, political systems/ideals, the nature of knowledge and science, and the
fundamental structure of reality.
To meet your study requirements, Averroes Centre provides good support system, a section in Rumi
Library with adequate books and internet access. Studying here will enhance your career prospects to
the best.
Once again, I extend a warm welcome to all students. Have a memorable and pleasant experience.
Prof Lily Want.
